Parking in Shrewsbury

If you’ve ever been to Shrewsbury before, and enjoyed it’s atmosphere, the mix of modern buildings amongst timber framed black and white houses, the view from The Castle and so on, you’ll know that despite all this – it’s a real bugger to find a parking space.

For guests at the ceremony there is limited roadside parking (sorry it’s metered) on the road leading up to The Castle and just passed the entrance to it. You cannot park within the castle grounds as only vehicles with permits can park there.

If you are staying at the lion Hotel as this is where were holding the reception, there are spaces for 70 vehicles but parking is reserved for residents. As guests are asked to arrive at the castle at around 2.30pm we suggest you park at the lion before that and walk up to the castle. The castle is literally less than 5 minutes walk away, however it is up hill, as nearly everything is in Shrewsbury.

On Street Parking

A pay and display system operates in the town centre for on-street parking.

Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 6.00pm (including bank holidays). The maximum length of stay in most town centre streets is one hour, a few have a two hour limit, see the notices on the pay and display machines. (Unfortunately if you park outside the castle on the street you will need to run back and put more money in the meter after an hour) Another reason why it’s better to park at the hotel.

The blue and yellow pay machines are located next to every parking bay in Shrewsbury Town Centre. Cost: 35- 60 minutes £1.20.

Motorcycle Parking

Motorbikes or scooters can park for free in Shrewsbury Borough Council’s off-street surface car parks in the marked M/C bays. Free parking is also available in the designated motorcycle bays on-street. The locations of these bays are shown on this map.

Parking outside designated bays, whether on a surface car park or on street will attract the normal pay and display fee. Charges are advertised on each pay machine or sign situated nearby.

Again there is not any motorcycle spaces near the castle itself. So if you are riding up we suggest you park them in the secure car park at the lion Hotel. Then walk up.
